When I got the book, there was a small note attached to it. It said “This book is about Darjeeling and it is for Darjeeling.” I couldn't agree more as this book acts as wonderful tribute to the essence of Darjeeling. It is told through the story of two friends, the red panda and the pangolin who embark on a zoo excursion and have an adventure. They find a wounded animal while on their journey. Both friends are hesitant to help at first, but as they get closer to the zoo, they find themselves listening to their hearts.

The adventures of Pandi the Panda is a beautiful parable about the importance of helping someone in need and looking out for each other. Its woven a central theme of compassion for others, bravery and courage. From the colourful and vibrant illustrations to capturing the essence of adventures, it has it all. The authors lucid style of writing reflect the excitement and the thrill of exploration by Pandi and Lynn. Pandi’s tiny acts of empathy and bravery demonstrate how one act of kindness can make the world a better place.

Above all, I love how the author sends a powerful message through the characters she has chosen in the book. Many of you know the Himalayan Red panda and the Himalayan/Asian black bear are native to the Singalila National park region but did you also know Darjeeling region is home to the Pangolin and the yellow breasted Marten, both of which are endangered species and are highly vulnerable to poaching.

Did you know: Pangolins are hunted locally for meat, superstitious reasons and according to folklore, its scales are thought to treat anything from asthma to arthritis. Also the Red panda population are declining due to the lack of nesting trees and bamboo.

Additionally, what also stands out is the subtle highlighting of the two prominent landmarks of Darjeeling, the Darjeeling’s Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, the largest high-altitude zoo in the country and Mandarin

oranges.
